Fit for Purpose – Developing Content-rich, Paid-for Websites

While in some areas of publishing, notably B2B, online is well-established and highly lucrative, in others it remains a risky business. Anne Hinsley has undertaken editorial, commissioning, development and management roles on paid-for websites and provides an unvarnished guide to some of the problems a transition from print to online may cause. A deep understanding of your market, she says, will help avoid many of them, and she looks at ways of gaining customer insights and engagement.

Digital Content Manager

Digital Governance - Achieving Agility Without Risking Damnation

The old publishers’ and editors’ battle cry used to be ‘print and be damned’. But, in truth, massive steps were taken to ensure content was factually accurate, legally robust and that the processes that ensured delivery - from print to paper boy – did not break down. Now the expansion from traditional media to online publication must establish governance protocols for digital content that are just as robust and embedded as those that have evolved for print. But while print systems and processes had centuries to evolve, digital governance needs to mature at speed, as technology evolves ever more rapidly. Anne Caborn takes a look at the flip side of the agile coin, including some of the key legal issues and their potential impact on both revenues and brand.

Leveraging the full value of your content with XML

Publishing practices have changed signifigantly over the past few years.  With new e-reader devices entering the market, how does an organisation cope with the increasing demand for new formats. Bret will discuss how publishers can strategically leverage the value of their information and keep up with these new demands, while at the same time discovering additional value in the content that they are already producing.  Covers topics such as why XML, how will my workflows be impacted, what does this mean for my current processes. The attendee will gain a basic understanding of the basic busniess benefits of XML as well as what it takes to get started down the XML path.

Understanding content for findability and re-use

Publishers have been exploring ways to exploit their content in electronic format for over two decades. Organizations whose activity is not primarily publishing (the so-called ‘accidental publishers’) are also increasingly looking at how to get their information to their user groups more effectively. With so many people therefore involved in the act of publishing fact-based content,  there seems to be a surprising lack of understanding about how to model information, and an unwillingness to take on new methods of content creation, even when the business case is clear. In this session Judi Vernau will talk about how to structure and classify your content so that it can be easily retrieved, combined and re-used in order to provide a better experience for current customers, and to exploit new opportunities for content development.

Publishing Expo in association with Mekon and sponsored by Bubo Bookshelf, present the Content Agility Theatre. This  forum brings a new dimension to Publishing Expo to educate and inform visitors on the future of publishing.

Presentations in the Content Agility Theatre will focus on making information agile, portable and reusable. This concept  is becoming ever more critical with the fast introduction of new delivery formats such as eBooks, ePub 3.0, Smart phones and Web 2.0

Visitors to the Content Agility Theatre will learn how content can be re purposed for different platforms and with the right infrastructure and foundation can drive new and dynamic products to make the most of your valuable content.

Traditional publishers have long since been focused on the final product ending up on paper. More recently the demand for eBooks and eZines are forcing publishers to publish to multiple channels which to-date involves PDF conversion and rudimentary page turners. XML is a content storage standard that can make it possible to repurpose your publications in many more ways than was ever feasible in the past.

What new concepts, best practice and technologies are influencing publishers today and how can we learn from this to help our future content strategy?

The preliminary agenda for the two days will be available soon  with the opportunity to submit papers still being available - contact jon.howell@ubm.com
